I'm sticking with the Medtronic 780G for another 4 years

After months of research on pump options, I've decided to stay with what's working for me - my Medtronic 780G with Simplera Sync sensors. Why, you might be wondering?

Text promoting Medtronic 780G with speech bubbles citing success and preference reasons. A bar chart compares recent blood sugar ranges.

I've surprised myself with this decision. I was convinced at the beginning of the research process that I was going to switch to CamAPS / Ypsomed / Libre 3. I saw the pump and sensor at ATTD23 and thought they were the loveliest little devices, I was envious when compared to my messy Guardian sensor and my relative brick of a pump.

My perspective has changed a lot over the last few months. A combination of switching to the Simplera Sync, diving into the pros and cons of the Medtronic and CamAPS algorithms, changing my bolusing strategy and insulin to carb ratios - all of these recalibrated the decision for me.

I thought I cared most about having a cute little pump and CGM and remote control via a phone.

What I actually care about the most is getting great results with tech that is reliable and familiar (even though the pump is big and the sensor only lasts 7 days).

The irony is that as my control has improved so much over these past weeks, the autocorrection boluses I thought I couldn't manage without have become a much smaller part of my overall insulin dose - last week they were only 11% of my daily dose (used to be 30%+). The autocorrections are something I don't want to give up but I am relying on them a lot less now that my boluses are more effective.

The biggest thing I have learnt over the last few weeks is that how you engage with your HCL system makes a big difference to the outcome it can deliver and I am glad I had a chance to see what the 780G can do when it's fully optimised. With TIR regularly in the 90%+ zone there isn't a strong enough reason for me to try something else and risk 4 years wishing I had stuck with a good thing.

So there you have it!

Also, in case anyone is wondering, I'm not affiliated with Medtronic or paid by them and this isn't a sponsored post, I'm just sharing my experiences with the 780G and hope it is helpful.

Thanks for reading!
